FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Lack of Steam – add salt

If the unit is not generating enough steam it is likely due to the low mineral content of the water in your area. Unplug vaporizer from electrical outlet and allow it to cool. Twist and Lift to remove steam unit slowly to allow hot water to first drain out. Add one or two PINCHES of salt (⅛ tsp) to the water and mix thoroughly. Replace the steam unit and plug in vaporizer. It should steam within 10 minutes. If vaporizer is still not generating steam add another pinch or two of salt as needed (up to ½ tsp). Add salt only by the PINCH, since too much salt can cause excessive boiling or blowing of fuse.

NOTE: If vaporizer has been operating normally and is now failing to steam, it needs to be cleaned. (See the Weekly Maintenance section of Care and Cleaning instructions.)

Lack of steam, clean the unit

If your vaporizer used to work perfectly, but now you are experiencing a lack of steam, it is probably because the vaporizer needs a good cleaning. We recommend a quick routine cleaning once a week. First, you will need to empty unused water from water container. Rinse container thoroughly with water, drain and wipe with a dry, clean cloth. With steam unit safely unplugged, soak steam unit in 4 inches of white vinegar for 10 minutes. Then, under a sink, with fingers covering the bottom hole of the steam unit, add tap water through the Steam Guard. Shake vigorously from side to side and then let water empty through the bottom hole. Repeat several times until black particles are no longer emitted and vinegar odor is gone. If using Vicks VapoSteam, make sure any residue us cleaned off steam unit using a mild detergent.

Then empty reservoir and rinse with tap water until bleach smell is gone. Dry with a clean cloth.

How to use Vicks Vapopads

Open scent pad pouch at notch to expose pad. Do not touch exposed pad directly. If you do touch a pad, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly. Insert the scent pads into the slots located on the top of the steam unit behind the steam outlet. Vapor intensity can be controlled by using 1 or 2 pads. Insert 1 pad into one slot for moderate scent release and insert another pad into the second slot for maximum scent release. Before changing or removing the pads unplug the steam unit from the outlet and allow to cool for 20-30 minutes. Pads should be replaced after 8 hours of use.

How to use liquid medication

For best results fill the medicine cup on the steam unit (located directly above the Steam Guard grill) with one tablespoon of medtox.org INHALANT. If you use Vicks VapoSteam® follow directions on the VapoSteam package. Please pay careful attention to the added cleaning directions in the Daily Maintenance and Care and Cleaning section.

NOTE: Vicks VapoSteam should not be placed in the medicine cup. It should be poured directly into the vaporizer water container (see VapoSteam package directions).

Black Particles in Base

The black particles that you see in your vaporizer are absolutely normal. These pieces are just the left over minerals from your water. The only reason they turn black is because they have been passed through the electrodes and vaporized. As long as you keep up with the weekly and daily maintenance on the unit, you should not experience any problems with its performance.

Vaporizer Operates too fast/boils over

Too much salt was added to the water. To correct the condition: Disconnect the vaporizer from the electrical outlet and allow it to cool. Pour out water and rinse container. Rinse steam unit as described in “Weekly Maintenance” section. Refill with fresh water but NO NOT ADD SALT. You live in a “hard water” area and minerals in the tap water are causing the vaporizer to steam to rapidly. Follow cleaning instructions in bullet point above. If unit still steams to rapidly, use ½ distilled water and ½ tap water.
